Situated in the Montreal Metropolitan Region, the Biotech City is a leading-edge scientific health research facility.

Located on the campus of the INRS (l'Institut national de la recherche scientifique), and specializing in health-related issues, the Cité de la Biotech makes it possible to conduct all the phases of drug development on the same site: from research, proof of concept, preclinical trials, formulation, clinical trials to production and marketing. It is the only facility of its kind in Quebec and Canada.

Covering an area of 120 hectares, this leading-edge scientific research complex houses 86 firms - many a strong focus on development, and 350 000 m2 (3 767 400 pi2) of land earmarked for construction, the INRS - the main stakeholder - has devised a development plan in collaboration with the Biotech City and the City of Laval.



The Biotech City embodies:

  • Exceptional collaboration between universities and businesses;
  • The international renowned INRS Health training and research center linked to major international networks (The Institute Pasteur International Network, The International Olympic Committee);
  • Specialized facilities of the Biotechnology Development Centre (Cdbl, a 12,000 m2 (129 168 pi2) multitenant building, meeting the most stringent biotechnology-specific criteria);
  • The Quebec Biotechnology Innovation Centre of Laval (CQIB), an incubator for biotechnologiy firms, which offers services to assist start-up firms as well as premises for rent;
  • A substential scientific business cummunity comprisong several world leaders such as: Actelion, Aventis, Boehringer Ingelheim (Canada), Ethypharm, Shire Biological Products, Roche Diagnostics, Servier Canada, GlaxoSmithKline and Shire Biochem.
  • More than 5,000 individuals in 80 companies in biotechnology and the health sciences operate within a 4-km radius;

Numerous parks and green spaces, including one protected green space (Bois Chomedey); direct access to the shore of the Rivière des Prairies; application of the most up-to-date principles of sustainable development to the development of the areas.
